In the Midst of a Celebration: The Government Inaugurated the New Entre Ríos-Palos Blancos Highway in Tarija
The national government officially inaugurated a new paved highway yesterday in Tarija, Chaco Province: the Entre Ríos-Palos Blancos highway stretch, measuring 60.90 kilometers.
“Many congratulations to our brothers and sisters of Tarija. Our new, paved Entre Ríos-Palos Blancos highway has now been inaugurated,” said the president, Evo Morales Ayma, during the celebration. “We will continue paving this area, as it is important to connect Tarija with Yacuiba,” he continued.
The construction provides benefits in terms of linking the Central Valley of Tarija with the Chaco area and the east of Bolivia. It was built as a “turnkey” project with an investment of 83.97 million dollars. It was financed by the State through the State General Treasury.
The stretch of highway is one of the most significant contributions in terms of achieving a roadway to the Chaco region; it is something that has been needed and wanted for more than 80 years in order to link the city of Tarija and the O'Connor and Gran Chaco Provinces.
This construction strengthens the Tarija Department’s connections with three international export ports in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans: The Central-South Corridor links Tarija with Chile and Paraguay; the North–South corridor connects with Argentina and Brazil; the West-South Corridor links Tarija with Chile and Peru.
The highway will benefit twenty-four thousand inhabitants from the O'Connor Province and over 300 thousand from the Tarija Department, as it will promote agricultural development and encourage eco-tourism to the Tarija area. The construction of the new paved highway directly created 500 jobs in the region and said construction work indirectly created more than 300 jobs.
The roadway's total platform width is 10.30 meters, and the width for vehicles is 7.30 meters; this breaks down into two lanes (in both directions) measuring 3.65 meters each with 1.5-meter berms at each side. The asphalt surface's thickness is five centers.
The construction reduces the journey by more than 17 kilometers as there are less slopes and less sharp, dangerous curves. This is partly due to the relief roads built throughout.
In addition, the highway's contractor will carry out the maintenance work and address any emergencies that crop up along this stretch of road for two years after final reception takes place, thus guaranteeing transit in the region.
